Toe socks are socks that provide a separate compartment for each individual toe. This means they follow the natural shape of the foot exactly — allowing for greater freedom of movement.

Toe socks are widespread in Japan, but they are not “traditional Japanese socks.” They were first machine-produced in Spain in the 1970s, although knitting patterns for five-toe socks can already be found from the 1950s. At that time, they were still unknown in Japan.
In 1981, Takahiro Idobata founded the first Japanese company dedicated exclusively to manufacturing toe socks and established them as a common clothing item in Japanese wardrobes. Today, 8% of all socks sold in Japan are toe socks, compared to less than 1% in Germany.
What is traditionally Japanese, however, are so-called Tabi socks, in which only the big toe is separated. They are still worn today as part of traditional festive clothing and with traditional wooden sandals known as Geta. Japanese carpenters also wear them as part of their workwear, since they traditionally wear black Tabi shoes. Today, they are also widely used in martial arts.
In Germany, they are often called “two-toe socks” and are commonly worn with flip-flops.
Each of our socks is pre-knitted on knitting machines co-developed by Knitido and then finished by hand. This process requires a great deal of patience, craftsmanship, and experience but it is the only way we can guarantee our high quality standards.
Regular socks are usually knitted like a tube on a circular knitting machine. The process starts at the cuff and continues down to the toe area. The socks are then removed from the machine and sewn closed at the front.
At Knitido, we begin knitting with the individual toe pockets and work our way up to the cuff. This allows us to completely avoid seams and linking. Loose threads created during the knitting process are pulled into the inside of the sock by hand.
In regular “tube socks” and tight shoes, the toes are usually pressed together. Their natural freedom of movement is restricted, and their sensory perception is reduced. As a result, the toe muscles are less active compared to “free toes,” and circulation can be limited.
Toe socks give each toe its own space again and improve sensory feedback. This stimulation encourages the toes to move more, activates their sensory function, and allows them to participate more naturally in the walking process. In addition, toe socks keep the spaces between the toes dry, helping feet stay warm for longer.
Toe socks activate each individual toe and reintegrate them into the walking process. This improves blood circulation in the feet and legs, which in turn also improves their heat regulation.
Yes, toe socks can help with sweaty feet.
In “normal tube socks” that enclose the entire foot, moisture tends to collect between the toes. Sweat cannot evaporate and instead remains trapped against the skin.
Toe socks can help with sweaty feet by first absorbing the moisture into the fabric and wicking it away from the skin. Since there is now breathable fabric between the toes, air can circulate more easily and help the moisture evaporate.
Yes, toe socks generally provide better temperature and moisture regulation.
Because the feet, especially the toe area, stay drier, less sweat accumulates. And since bacteria and fungi thrive mainly in moist environments, reducing moisture also helps prevent the unpleasant odors they can cause.
Yes, our toe socks designed to support foot misalignments can help address this problem to varying degrees:
For many people affected by Hallux Valgus, these effects can already help reduce discomfort. However, we cannot promise a cure, as this condition can have many different causes.
Regardless, we recommend doing more good for your feet overall: consult a podiatrist, attend gait or running training, and learn to reconnect with your feet. You may be surprised at how much your quality of life can improve.
No, 100% cotton does not make sense for toe socks.
The reason is that both the sock itself and the individual toe compartments require a certain degree of stretch and shape retention, since every person has differently sized feet and toes.
That’s why we knit a thin elastane thread together with the cotton yarn. It ensures that the socks return to their proper shape after being stretched. To maintain the sock’s shape and durability over time, we also need a certain amount of nylon.
But like you, we believe that everyday toe socks should primarily be made from cotton, natural fibers, or wool. We only use synthetic materials when they serve a specific function for example, in sports socks.
All models in the “Cotton and Merino” range are made from New Zealand merino wool. In New Zealand, mulesing is not necessary.
The remaining models containing merino wool are made from Australian merino wool. For these products, we cannot guarantee that mulesing was not used.
No, unfortunately we don’t offer toe tights. At the moment, this is both beyond our technical capabilities and something we don’t consider particularly practical.
When choosing the correct sock size, toe socks are highly durable.
The foundation for this lies in the use of high-quality materials and more than 40 years of experience in manufacturing toe socks.
However, individual foot characteristics and proper care also have a major impact on durability. Hard footwear, rough heels, long toenails, excessive wear, or concentrated pressure while running can, for example, cause holes to appear prematurely. To ensure a long lifespan for our toe socks, please follow our care instructions.
When washing your toe socks, it’s important to remove them properly: first pull the sock off from the heel, then gently peel it off each toe individually. This prevents the toe compartments from twisting together and helps them get properly clean during washing.
You can wash your toe socks normally in the washing machine — just make sure to follow the care instructions. After washing, simply hang them on a clothesline to dry.
To protect delicate materials such as wool, we recommend using a laundry bag.
When worn regularly, toe socks allow your toes to return to their natural, slightly spread position. That’s a good thing. If you have previously worn shoes that were too tight and compressed your toes, it’s possible that after a few months you may naturally choose the next shoe size up or slightly wider shoes. Don’t worry — you’re doing the right thing.
Over many years, shoes that are too tight can lead to deformities such as overlapping toes, weakened toes, hammer toes, or Hallux Valgus. Toe socks help prevent these issues from developing in the first place. They strengthen your feet and toes — almost effortlessly, as part of everyday wear.
Yes, absolutely.
Both Tabi socks and toe socks are an ideal complement to barefoot shoes, supporting a healthy and natural walking style.
Toe shoes can be worn barefoot, but in some cases they feel more comfortable with socks.
For this, we recommend choosing thin toe socks, such as those from the Track & Trail line.
